In the Legislative Assembly today, Minister Steven Myers announced that Islanders who purchase an eligible electric vehicle (EV) can receive the Universal Electric Vehicle Incentive retroactive to April 1, 2021.
Any bill of sale on an eligible electric vehicle, plug in hybrid, or fully electric vehicle dated April 1, 2021 or later will be paid out. The incentive is the most generous EV incentive in Canada, offering $5,000 to Islanders who purchase both new and used EVs and $2,500 for plug-in hybrids.
Incentives will be applied directly on the bill of sale or lease agreement. Dealerships will soon be able to submit their forms through the provincial website to receive compensation. Islanders who purchase an EV can expect to receive their free level two charger in the coming weeks.
“I was hoping to make this announcement even sooner, but am thrilled to be officially kicking off the program now. We have heard great feedback from automotive dealerships, their association and Islanders alike. Electrifying our transportation sector will make a big difference in reaching our climate goals. This is a step in the right direction and will help EVs become more accessible to all Islanders.”
- Environment, Energy and Climate Action Minister Steven Myers
Minister Myers also announced that the existing monetary limits of $5,000 and $10,000 for the lifetime of a property on efficiency programs have been removed. There is no maximum for each property and every homeowner is eligible for these programs. This change allows all Islanders to continue to make important improvements to their homes, and help reach our Net Zero goals.
