Hon. Dennis King, Premier of Prince Edward Island issued the following statement:

“Events in the past week have been challenging to come to grips with for so many Islanders.  Individuals in our Indigenous and Muslim communities, and now students in our local schools and members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community, continue to experience hate and discrimination.  This is not acceptable.

No one is born knowing how to hate; hate is a learned behaviour.  We cannot turn a blind eye to these types of behaviour – these acts continue to happen in our province and in our country and it is not who we are as Islanders or Canadians.

Homophobia, transphobia, biphobia, islamophobia and racism have no place in our province.

All Islanders – no matter how you identify, who you worship, or who you love – should be respected and treated equally. Individuals should never fear celebrating who they are or who they desire to be.

I am calling on all Islanders, today – and every day – to stand up for the rights of all individuals and speak out against intolerance and discrimination of any kind.

We must do better.”
