Provincial parks’ staff were awarded the 2023 Agency Award of Excellence from the Canadian Parks Council (CPC) last night at the CPC Annual General Meeting in St. Andrews, New Brunswick.

The annual award recognizes an extraordinary achievement by a member agency of CPC. PEI Parks received the award for its outstanding teamwork, diligence and immediate action to restore provincial parks in the province after Hurricane Fiona.

In total, over 500 truckloads of debris were removed from the province’s eight provincial campgrounds and 12 day parks. PEI Parks staff, as well as private contractors and forestry crews from Saskatchewan and New Brunswick, worked together to restore the parks. Over 800 new trees and shrubs were planted. All parks were able to open on time for the 2023 season including Mark Arendz Provincial Ski Park at Brookvale being ready to host events of the 2023 Canada Winter Games in February.

“Our provincial parks suffered heavy tree damage and required extensive clean up before welcoming Islanders and tourists back to enjoy them this year. The staff at PEI Parks acted quickly and led the significant coordination effort between partner organizations, local stakeholders, and private citizens to ensure our parks were safe for guests. I want to recognize the hardworking and dedicated team at PEI Parks and congratulate them on this much deserved award.”
