About the MMIWG and TRC Annual Status Reports

In 2015, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's (TRC) released its final report. The report contained 94 Calls to Action to further reconciliation between Canadians and Indigenous Peoples. Following the release of the TRC final report, the Indigenous Relations Secretariat developed an evergreen document to track the status of various recommendations made in the TRC final report. In 2019, the Government of PEI committed to releasing a regular status report in the Legislative Assembly that would provide an update on initiatives within government that responded to the Calls to Action.

In 2019, the National inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG) published the Final Report including the 231 Calls for Justice.  In June 2020, the Government of PEI tabled its preliminary report related to implementation of the MMIWG Calls for Justice. In advancing reconciliation with the Mi'kmaq and other Indigenous communities on PEI, the government has worked to ensure that its response to the Calls for Justice is Indigenous-led. The voices, perspectives, lived experiences, and guidance of Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirit people are central to the approach that government takes to address each Call.

In 2023, the annual MMIWG and TRC status reports were combined. This enhanced format allows for a more extensive understanding of the initiatives undertaken by all government departments to respond to the Calls. The new format provides a comprehensive summary and detailed appendices that provide specific responses to each Call for Justice or Call to Action for which the Government of PEI is responsible for implementing.
