The Ministry works to collaboratively address challenges with housing and permitting, to increase housing stock, and to work closely with municipalities on development of a province-wide land use plan for PEI. The department also provides leadership to support strong local governance and viable and accountable communities.

Inspection Services

The Inspection Services section is responsible for the provision of a coordinated and integrated delivery of regulations and codes aimed at protecting public health, safety and the natural environment. The subject areas involved include land use regulations pertinent to subdivision and development, Acts and regulations for the adoption of the Canadian Electrical Code, Canadian Elevator Safety Code, Amusement Device Codes, National Plumbing Code, American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) codes for boiler and pressure vessels safety and building standards for barrier-free design (National Building Code of Canada).

Land Use Planning

The Municipal Affairs Division is the primary contact between: the Government of Prince Edward Island municipalities and  municipal interest groups  What does the Municipal Affairs Division do for PEI? The branch provides support to municipalities in the following areas: formation, amalgamation, and other boundary changes elections governance municipal financial management administration and management official plans and land use and subdivision bylaws The branch collects and maintains information regarding municipal bylaws, financing, boundaries, and a range of other municipal processes. The branch also oversees the Municipal Support Grant Program, as well as grants for the Federation of Prince Edward Island Municipalities.

Housing Services

The Housing Services Division is responsible for the operation of social housing and renovation programs which promote appropriate and affordable housing for Islanders who need support. The Division provides a range of programs including the Seniors Housing Program, Family Housing Program, PEI Home Renovation Programs, Seniors Home Repair Program and Seniors Safe @ Home Program.
