In 2016/2017, the Government of Prince Edward Island developed a 10-year energy strategy to reduce energy use, establish cleaner and locally produced energy sources and moderate future energy price increases. There have been many changes that require the province to rethink and update its strategy, including the commitment to be net zero by 2040. Government is inviting Islanders to share their opinions about energy in PEI to help guide future legislation and government priorities and develop a new energy strategy for PEI. Download the 2023 PEI Energy Blueprint Discussion Paper and share your feedback by completing the Energy Blueprint Survey.
A path to a stronger, more sustainable and resilient province
The PEI Energy Strategy is based on recommendations from Dunsky Energy Consulting with considerable input from individuals, businesses and organizations who took part in the consultation process.
Key Areas for Action
The Provincial Energy Strategy addresses four key areas where we need to take action to determine our energy future:
- Energy Efficiency and Conservation
- Power Generation and Management
- Biomass and Heating
- Transportation
Guiding principles for energy strategy
- Lower greenhouse gas emissions
- Actions and decisions should be cost-effective
- Local economic opportunities
The energy strategy will result in energy savings for Islanders and greater self-sufficiency by reducing our reliance on imported fossil fuels. It will also translate into good jobs and economic opportunity with an increase in retrofitting projects and more energy produced locally.
Implementing the Plan
The PEI Energy Corporation and the efficiency PEI are developing an implementation plan. It will be aligned with the PEI Climate Change Mitigation Recommendations Report.
