Prince Edward Island is strengthening access to care and improving health services across the province with 25 new physicians hired so far in 2025, adding to the 41 physicians hired in 2024 for a cumulative total of 66 physicians in 18 months.

Between January 1 and July 22, 2025, PEI signed agreements with 25 new physicians. Of those, nine have already started practicing; 10 will begin in the second half of 2025; and six more will begin in 2026.

“We continue to see steady momentum in our physician recruitment efforts over the past 18 months,” said Mark McLane, Minister of Health and Wellness.  “Islanders deserve timely access to high-quality care, and we remain focused on recruiting physicians who bring passion, skill, and a commitment to serving our communities.”

The 25 physicians signed since January 2025 represent an important part of the province’s broader physician recruitment and retention strategy. While eight previously working physicians have retired or moved on due to various reasons, the province is pleased to report a net gain of 17 physicians so far this year.

Physician recruitment continues to be a collaborative effort between Health PEI, the Department of Health and Wellness, physicians, and communities across Prince Edward Island.

Health PEI is actively pursuing top medical talent across Canada and internationally. Thanks to the dedication of recruitment teams, community partners, and the physicians who choose to make PEI their home, the agency is seeing real results.

PEI offers one of the most competitive compensation packages in the country, including top-tier pay for family and specialty physicians, generous vacation and parental leave, full overhead coverage, and new incentives for physicians managing larger patient panels.

Combined with the Island’s natural beauty, strong communities, and supportive medical environment, PEI is increasingly becoming a destination of choice for physicians and their families.
