Premier Dennis King today confirmed that the PEI Liquor Control Commission’s Chief Executive Officer Andrew MacMillan is leaving his position to pursue an opportunity in the private sector.

“I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the Commission, making this a very difficult decision for me,” said MacMillan. “While the Premier has asked me to stay on as CEO, an exciting opportunity presented itself that I could not turn down. This is an opportunity that does not come along often. After much consideration, I believe this is the best decision for my family and career.”

Premier King praised MacMillan and his efforts as CEO. “Much has been accomplished during Andrew MacMillan’s tenure. The Commission has been well run, with a focus on social responsibility, innovation, and reform.”

“Mr. MacMillan oversaw the regulation of cannabis and the establishment of PEI Cannabis retail operations, which are regarded as being among the most successful in the country. I would have liked to see him continue as CEO, but I appreciate and support his decision. I thank him for his service and wish him well.”

The PEI Liquor Control Commission regulates the sale of beverage alcohol under the authority of the Liquor Control Act.  It oversees the operation of seventeen corporate retail stores, eight agency stores, and handles liquor licensing and distribution across the province.  It is also responsible for the regulation and sale of cannabis through its related corporation, the Cannabis Management Corporation.

Premier King announced that James MacLeod, presently the Commission’s Director of Corporate Services, has been named acting Chief Executive Officer.
