Community meals help to reduce social isolation for older adults in PEI

Island seniors will benefit from funding announced today to support meals for older Islanders in communities across the province.
Forty-one organizations have been approved to host the community meals thanks to over $160,000 in funding from the Department of Social Development and Seniors.
“Our department is committed to improving the quality of life for older Islanders, reducing social isolation, and helping seniors better connect with their communities and peers. These meals are a great way for older Islanders to visit with friends and neighbours while enjoying a delicious meal, and wonderful hospitality provided by these outstanding community organizations.”
— Minister of Social Development and Seniors Barb Ramsay
The Department launched the Seniors Community Meal Grant Pilot Program in 2024 to provide funding for organizations to host free communal meals for seniors. The pilot was well received, and the Department offered the program for a second year. Applications were reviewed in the spring, and grants of up to $5,000 were awarded in June.
Meals must be free for seniors and can be provided at a one-time event or at re-occurring events.
“We see first-hand the positive impact these meals create, and how healthy it is for seniors to be interacting with their peers and having a good time,” said the Chair of the Parkview Senior Citizens Club Jim Steele. “We are proud to partner with the province to deliver these community meals.”
As part of its commitment to seniors, the province is developing a new 5-year Seniors Action Plan. This plan will recommend measures to help address the unique needs of PEI’s aging population, promote their well-being and quality of life, and ensure that they have the support and resources they need to age well in the right place for them. Details of the plan are expected to be released in Fall 2025.
