Canadian Agriculture Safety Week is March 11 to 17, but Island farmers and their families know the importance of following safe farm practices all year round.
Agriculture and Fisheries Minister Robert Henderson says the week helps raise awareness of the importance of farm safety and the need to follow safe practices in all farm operations.
“Farm safety is everyone’s responsibility and undertaking safe farming practices will make the industry safer and more productive,” Minister Henderson said. “The members of our farming community – like Islanders in general – make Prince Edward Island mighty by using our small size to work together to accomplish great things. The community is to be commended for the actions it has taken, and will continue to take, to protect the health and well-being of farmers, farm workers and their families.”
This year’s theme is “Be an AgSafe Family” - and 4-H members across the province have made farm safety an integral part of their project work.
“As a positive youth development with deep and proud agricultural roots, the 4-H program on Prince Edward Island recognizes the value and importance of agricultural safety,” said Kelly Mullaly, administrative director of the Prince Edward Island 4-H Council . “The many volunteers who lead our livestock projects in communities across the Island not only share important information about best practices in their industries but, through their personal accounts and actions, they also serve as important role models for our members and their families.”
