A number of rural fire departments across Prince Edward Island have updated their equipment and facilities to better protect lives and property.
The provincial government has provided funding of $138,826 through the Community Revitalization Program. The program supports the revitalization of rural communities through infrastructure investments.
“We are a volunteer fire department with limited resources and this funding will help carry out our capital plan to upgrade equipment and facilities,” said Tommy MacLeod, chief of the Montague fire department.
The following projects have been approved:
- New London and Vernon River fire departments replaced their pager systems;
- Alberton fire department installed a water softener to clean equipment;
- Eastern Kings fire department installed a new steel roof;
- North Rustico fire department upgraded some of its equipment; and
- Montague fire department will acquire new equipment, install a new roof and windows and add an extra bathroom and showers to improve the warming centre in the fire hall.
“The volunteer members of local fire departments play a vital role in protecting the lives and property of their fellow citizens. Support for these projects reflects government’s commitment to strengthen rural communities and improve their well-being.”

The total cost of the projects is $277,693.
