Government offering free heat pumps to low income Islanders as province moves towards Net Zero goal
Beginning December 1, the Government of Prince Edward Island will offer qualified low-income Islanders a free heat pump. This will assist in eliminating the need for fossil burning heat sources in residential homes.

Under the Province’s efficiency programs, Islanders with a total household income of $35,000 or less are considered low income and will be eligible for a free heat pump.
Government also recognizes that now more than ever, Islanders need streamlined, easy to access services. As a result, the department of Environment, Energy and Climate Action, in partnership with the department of Transportation and Infrastructure, will implement a new service model that includes an in-person navigation service, so that Islanders can find the best energy efficient program for their home’s needs.
Islanders will no longer have to fill out applications or wait weeks to receive their rebates. If they qualify, government will arrange for their heat pump installation with a local contractor and government will cover the cost.
All Islanders will be able to book a one-on-one meeting with a dedicated customer service representative (CSR) in advance through Contact PEI to go over all energy efficient programs they are eligible for. The CSR will inform the client of what to bring to the meeting in order to ensure quick and easy service. CSRs will be located at all eight Access PEI locations across PEI.
“We know that low-income Islanders have a harder time making the switch to electric heat sources based on the upfront costs,” said Minister Myers. “But this new service models make rebates and services easier and more accessible for all Islanders.”
