The following is a statement from Premier Wade MacLauchlan, minister of Justice and Public Safety and attorney general.
"Prince Edward Island’s police-reported Crime Severity Index has decreased for the fourth year in a row, down by 2.7 per cent in 2016. At 48.5, Prince Edward Island has the lowest crime severity index in Canada. The Crime Severity Index measures the volume and seriousness of police-reported crime for both violent and non-violent offences. In addition, the index for the violent crimes has decreased by 15.6 per cent.
"As Islanders, we are fortunate to have some of the lowest levels of serious crime in the country. This is a direct result of the law enforcement officers who work to protect our safety and security, and the justice system that empowers their work. I thank all Island law enforcement officers for the work they do in preventing crime, keeping our communities safe, and protecting those most vulnerable in society.
"Collectively and collaboratively, we will continue to build on these successes, with particular attention to integrated and intelligence-led crime prevention and to improving access to justice for vulnerable Islanders."
