PEI public libraries are once again offering Island children access to free summer reading programs.
As Canada’s largest bilingual summer reading program for children, PEI public libraries will be among the over 2,000 libraries participating in the TD Summer Reading Club. Through this program, hundreds of thousands of young readers will have access to free reading materials, activities, and online content designed to keep them engaged in reading during the summer months.
Beginning June 27, Island families can pick up their free 2025 reading kit at one of 25 PEI public library branches. Kits include a recommended book list, a notebook to track progress, stickers, a postcard, as well as the web access code to register for the online program.
“The summer reading program is a great way to keep young people reading over the summer in a fun and accessible way. Our public libraries continue to be valuable community hubs that offer interesting materials and programming for people of all ages.
”— Minister of Education and Early Years, Robin Croucher
PEI public library services will also be launching the new Reading Dragons program. For each hour of reading participants complete, they will be eligible to receive one of 12 collectible dragon cards from their local library branch. To receive the whole collection, each participant will need to complete 12 hours of reading.
To celebrate another summer of reading, everyone is invited to the launch event for both reading programs on June 27 at the Charlottetown Library Learning Centre. Key features of the launch event include:
- Guest speaker Canadian author-scientist Joan Marie Galat will begin her talk at 10:00 a.m. She will cover topics about outer space, including how to find the North Star, locate constellations, and discover myths and legends relating to the night sky.
- Family-friendly activities start at 1:00 p.m. to celebrate the beginning of summer.
Visit your local library or follow PEI library services for the latest summer activities and programs.
