As Tropical Storm Henri approaches Atlantic Canada over the next several days, Islanders are encouraged to monitor Environment Canada for weather warnings and updated information.
Hurricanes and tropical storms are violent weather systems which can change direction on short notice. Even a significantly weakened system can carry high winds, heavy rain and flooding and can cause widespread destruction. Over the weekend Islanders are reminded to bring in or tie down furniture, play equipment, barbeques or anything that can become projectiles in high winds and review their preparedness plans.
Helpful reminders include:
- making a household emergency plan to help everyone know what to do in case of emergency;
- updating your preparedness kits, including extra food, pet supplies, water, masks and hand sanitizer for five days;
- bringing in or tying down furniture, play equipment, barbeques or anything that can become projectiles in high winds;
- ensuring adequate fuel supplies;
- replacing batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide alarms; and
- keeping up with the latest information from reliable sources such as local media and PEI Public Safety.
