As temperatures hover around the freezing point, Island drivers should be on guard for slippery roadways.
While provincial crews begin plowing, salting and sanding roads between 3 and 4 a.m. for the morning commute, rapidly changing weather can still affect driving conditions.
“This has been a very challenging winter for our staff who have dealt with huge temperature fluctuations and frequent mixed precipitation,” Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy Minister Paula Biggar said. “Our crews make great efforts to clear roads and identify problem areas, but late-developing snowfall or quick freezes may leave some sections of road partly covered or icy during commuting times.”
Updated road conditions are available by calling 5-1-1 or visiting 511.gov.pe.ca. Road cameras, text reports, and maps offer government’s most recent information on road conditions.
All drivers are advised to use snow tires during winter months, adjust their driving to road conditions, and be alert to how the weather is affecting other drivers. When uncertain about road conditions, drivers should allow for extra driving time to get to their destination.
