Design plans for the new East Royalty Elementary School were unveiled today.

The new school will be built next to L.M. Montgomery Elementary School, using the same design as the recently opened Sherwood Elementary School. Once complete, East Royalty Elementary will welcome up to 650 students, serving Island families living in the eastern region of Charlottetown up to Stanhope

Offering multiple areas for flexible student learning, support, and counselling, East Royalty Elementary will provide students, teachers, and staff with a modern learning environment. Using a nature-centric interior design and architectural style, with daylight and advanced acoustic control, as well as other elements of modern design, notable features of the new school will include:

  • Maker’s spaces for project-based learning;
  • Open concept classroom walls to support team teaching and group activities;
  • Modern energy systems;
  • More outdoor space for physical activities.

Construction of the new school is expected to begin later this summer with an anticipated completion in 2028.

Quotes:

“This project is part of the largest investment in school infrastructure our province has ever made. We’re building for the future by supporting growing communities like East Royalty and ensuring Island students have the modern spaces they need to learn, thrive, and succeed.”

— Honourable Rob Lantz, Premier of Prince Edward Island

“Island children deserve to learn in bright, welcoming, and modern learning environments, where they have the flexibility to learn on their terms, individually or in groups, and get support from school staff in safe and accessible spaces. Leveraging the proven design of Sherwood Elementary allows us to fast track the project timeline so that students and educators alike can benefit from another vibrant learning and teaching environment.”

— Honourable Robin Croucher, Minister of Education and Early Years

“By investing in new schools and modernized spaces, we are also investing in Island students and communities. We want students to have access to the world-class schools they need to learn and succeed. Strong partnerships with the education and construction sectors will ensure infrastructure meets the needs of students today and tomorrow.”

— Honourable Ernie Hudson, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure
