The provincial government has announced the first three projects to be approved under the new $2.5 million Community Revitalization Program. The projects are as follows:

  • a new locally designed and built solar array that will help make the Cavendish Farms Wellness Centre in Montague one of Prince Edward Island’s most environmentally efficient facilities by reducing its energy bill;
  • Cavendish Farms Wellness Centre’s leaking boiler will be replaced with an energy efficient cold start boiler; and
  • Kings County Farmers’ Market in Cardigan will receive funding to replace the roof with new steel roofing.

“I congratulate the proponents of these projects which will enhance the operations of two popular local facilities,” Rural and Regional Development Minister Pat Murphy said. “Prince Edward island is mighty because our smallness helps us work together to get things done and government is pleased to support these initiatives to help revitalize our local communities.”

Other funding sources for the Cavendish Farms Wellness centre projects come from the town of Montague and the municipal strategic component of the gas tax program administered by the Department of Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy. Opened in 2009, the Wellness Centre offers a regulation size ice surface, office space, meeting rooms, a canteen, two walking tracks and a library. It hosts hundreds of teams and serves thousands of people annually.

Montague is a regional support service centre for a rural population of more than 20,000 people.

The Kings County Farmers Market and the village of Cardigan are also contributing to the market’s roof replacement. In operation for 10 years, the market enables local farmers to sell their products directly to the public and provides consumers the option to purchase fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables.
