Islanders with mobility challenges will be better able to explore provincial parks this summer thanks to further investment by Tourism PEI.
“My government believes all Islanders should have access to our provincial parks to enjoy the sand and surf, and we are taking concrete steps toward that goal,” Economic Development and Tourism Minister Chris Palmer said. “This year we will invest just over $100-thousand to further improve access and inclusion at several parks throughout the province including Jacques Cartier and Panmure Island.”
This investment will allow the province to purchase three more beach wheelchairs, two more beach mats and four swing sets that include special swing seats for children with disabilities.
“This is a great investment by the PEI Government,” PEI Council of People with Disabilities executive director Marcia Carroll said. “Social isolation is one of the main barriers Islanders living with disabilities face. So the continued investment into recreational accommodations and equipment helps to break down this barrier and we are pleased to see the current government using a disability lens when they make decisions to improve the capacity and development of our provincial parks.”
In 2018, the province invested just over $20,000 for a floating wheel chair for Basin Head and an accessibility mat at Cabot Park.
