Renovations to the turf fields at Cornwall’s Terry Fox Sports Complex will help the high-use fields continue to host provincial, regional, and national-level competitions.

The Prince Edward Island government contributed $100,000 to the project through the Rural Growth Initiative’s Community Revitalization Program. Rural and Regional Development Minister Pat Murphy announced the funding today (September 11) at the Terry Fox complex.

“The Cornwall turf is another example of how our Community Revitalization Program is making a difference here in Cornwall but across the province,” Minister Murphy said. “By bringing athletes and Islanders together in the spirit of competition and fun, these fields exemplify the connectedness that makes Prince Edward Island mighty – and our government is pleased to help keep them in peak condition.”

The renovations have redone the granular sub-base of the fields as well as extensions and repairs. It has also addressed ongoing drainage issues, which will help extend the life of the two turf fields which were built in 2006.

“The kids are really excited to see all the changes to the new turf,” said Mark MacDougall, the physical education instructor at nearby Elliot River School. “It is an upgrade from what it was last year and we feel very fortunate to have access to the field during the school year, which can now extended even later in the season thanks to the new upgrades.”

The Terry Fox turf fields are scheduled to host the 2018 CCAA Men’s Soccer Championships and the 2019 U-17 National Club Soccer Championships. For more information on the turf fields visit: http://cornwallpe.ca/parks-recreation.
