Sherwood Home closing in early October, residents relocated to PE Home

Residents of Sherwood Home are moving to Prince Edward Home over the coming weeks to provide a safer location for care. 

The nine residents will move on or before October 3. This relocation is due to the current building not meeting National Building Code (NBC) standards for safety. A recent review of the home found it did not meet current NBC standards for egress and fire separation requirements. The home had passed inspections in all previous years.

“Sherwood Home has a long history of serving Islanders. Until now, it has been a home for people who need enhanced care due to intellectual disabilities. However, we recognize that this building is no longer the best location for this program. As such, we have been in planning to move residents to a new setting for some time, as part of the Mental Health and Addictions Redevelopment Plan,” said Andrew MacDougall, Executive Director, Community Services and Seniors Care. “The recent review and subsequent findings have meant we need to fast track this plan. However, we are confident the new living situation will be better for the residents both from care and safety perspectives.”

At PE Home, the residents will have the same staff with them as they have had at Sherwood Home, maintaining their care team relationships and helping to ensure a smooth transition. Residents will have access to single rooms and more accessible surroundings for those with mobility challenges. 

All residents and families have been notified of this change in setting and the change has been received positively. 

The future possible uses for Sherwood Home and possible changes are still being evaluated.
