Statement by Premier King on the passing of former MLA Ross Young
Hon. Dennis King, Premier of Prince Edward Island, issued the following statement on the passing of former MLA Ross Young:
“I am saddened to note the passing of Ross Young, former member of the Legislative Assembly and a close friend to so many Islanders.
“Born in Souris in 1962, Ross attended local schools and was educated at Mount Allison University and the University of Prince Edward Island. After working off Island following school, Ross returned home to Souris and was first elected in a 1991 by-election in the former electoral district of 1st Kings. Ross succeeded his father, the late Ross “Johnny” Young, as MLA for the district. Re-elected in 1993, Young served on several legislative committees and sat as a member of the Election Act and Electoral Boundaries Commission. In 1994, Ross sponsored the bill that created single member electoral districts in the province. After leaving electoral politics in 1996 Ross worked in the financial services and post-secondary education and various private sector consulting roles.
“Ross was instrumental in the re-establishment of minor football in Eastern Kings as coach of the Souris Wildcats and he served on the boards of the PEI Tackle Football League, Junior Achievement, the Holland College Advisory Board, the United Way of PEI, and the Association of Former Members of the Legislative Assembly. He was also a member of the Kings County Exhibition Association, the Souris Curling Club and the Souris Ski Club.
“Ross was a proud Islander and an active community member both in public and in private life who will be greatly missed. My deepest sympathies go out to Mary, Laura, John Ross and Jay on their loss at this difficult time.”
