Statement by Premier Lantz on the announcement of toll reductions for the Confederation Bridge and Wood Islands ferry

Hon. Rob Lantz, Premier of Prince Edward Island, issued the following statement on the federal announcement of toll reductions at the Confederation Bridge and Wood Islands ferry:
“Today’s announcement is welcome news for Islanders.
This has been a top priority for me. Since becoming Premier, I’ve advocated strongly to reduce the tolls on the Confederation Bridge and the Wood Islands ferry. I’ve consistently raised the issue with the Prime Minister and federal ministers at every opportunity.
These tolls have placed an unfair cost on our province, making life more expensive, creating barriers for businesses and tourism, and making it harder for Islanders to stay connected.
Islanders have been asking for this for a long time. These tolls have never reflected the reality of living in a province that relies so heavily on our connections to our neighbouring provinces.
I’m pleased to see the federal government responding to those concerns with today’s announcement. I also want to recognize the efforts of Senator Percy Downe, who has been a tireless advocate on this issue and whose continued focus helped bring national attention to the file.
Lowering these tolls will make a meaningful difference. It will help ease the cost of living, improve access, and support our local economy.
This is real progress, and I’m hopeful we can continue to build on it. Islanders deserve a fair approach when it comes to staying connected with the rest of the country - and today marks an important step forward.”
