Statement from Minister of Justice and Public Safety Bloyce Thompson

“Today, we get to celebrate an important anniversary of a document that has stood as the backbone of human rights around the world, and the foundation of all international human rights treaties created by the United Nations.”

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) was adopted on the 10th of December in 1948 by the United Nations General Assembly as a result of the experience of the second world war. This document is widely recognized as having inspired and paved the way for the adoption of more than 70 human rights treaties applied across the globe. Today, 192 UN member states have signed on to respect the UDHR, which has been translated into over 550 languages – making it the most translated document in the world. 

Given the significance of this anniversary and the document it represents, I encourage all Islanders to visit the resources below pertaining to the UDHR and how we can all continue to implement these human rights into everyday life to make our Island an inclusive and welcome place for everyone.”
