October is Women’s History Month, giving Islanders the chance to be aware of and celebrate the many accomplishments of Island women in our proud and rich history.

The 2022 Women’s History theme, “Providing Healing, Promoting Hope,” is both a tribute to the ceaseless work of caregivers and frontline workers during this ongoing pandemic, the response and recovery efforts after Fiona and also a recognition of the thousands of ways that women of all cultures have provided both healing and hope throughout history.

“Women’s History month is a time to reflect on the contributions that women have made to shape our country and our province. It is a time to recognize and celebrate trailblazers that have defied gender norms and empowered generations of women. Now more than ever, we recognize the critical importance of customized programs and supports, as we work together towards a more equitable society,”

 - Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, Natalie Jameson.

In 1993, women held five of the most influential positions of government in the province of Prince Edward Island. This is the first, and only, time in Canadian history that five women held these positions at the same time. Read more of their story.
