Women’s History Month -- celebrated in October -- is a chance to recognize pioneering Island women and encourage Island girls to stand up for their rights.

The theme for Women’s History Month 2016 is “Because of Her,” when Canadians are encouraged to remember and honour the activists, leaders, artists, academics, and entrepreneurs who have advanced the cause of equality.

“Women have made tremendous gains on Prince Edward Island and across Canada, but we can still press for justice and equality here and across the world,” said Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy Minister Paula Biggar, who is minister responsible for the Status of Women. “I urge governments, businesses and organizations throughout our province to examine themselves and their performance in terms of gender equality, so that all Islanders can enjoy the same opportunities to grow and prosper.”

Persons Day on October 18 is another day of note in Canada. Persons Day is celebrated each year in recognition of the Persons Case, which is a historical landmark in the fight for equality by Canadian women.  In 1929, The "Famous Five" struggled for and won the right for women to be legally recognized as persons and, therefore, eligible to sit in the Senate.

In addition, October 11 is the International Day of the Girl. It is a day devoted to helping girls across the world achieve a life where they can benefit from clean water, adequate food, good education and supportive communities.

“October is an especially important month for the cause of women’s rights in Canada and beyond,” Minister Biggar said. “This is an occasion to remember past victories and face oncoming challenges as we work toward fairness for all.”
