Background: On May 23, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) issued a nationwide overtime ban as part of a legal strike action. While Canada Post will remain operational during this period, customers may experience service delays.
Please be aware: in the event of a strike, initial access to the online form may be disrupted; subsequent delivery of this service will be in-person only at your Access PEI site of service, or by courier for a fee. Prince Edward Island has a 5-year motor vehicle driver's license. All PEI residents are required to renew their driver’s license on or before the expiry date shown on their current license. Rather than wait until the last minute, you can renew your license up to 5 months before your card expires. This can be done by using the online form below, or in-person by visiting an Access PEI location near you.
Eligible for Online Renewal
The following PEI license holders are eligible for online renewal if the license holder:
- is at least 17 years of age;
- has a valid driver’s license for Class 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 8;
- has a driver's license that is active or has not been expired for more than 6 months; AND
- has had no change of name or address;
- has no restrictions listed on the back of their current license;
- is not required to submit a medical or vision report at the time of renewal.
During the online renewal process, there are several questions you need to answer. Based on your answers, your application may be denied and you may be asked to appear in person at an Access PEI site. If you have an unpaid fine, a driver suspension, or if your driver's licence has been cancelled, you cannot renew online.
To renew online you will need:
- Current license;
- Date of birth;
- Current driver’s license number (found on the top of your card);
- The renewal fee; and,
- Other information found on your current driver’s license.

Ineligible for Online Renewal
The following PEI license holders are ineligible for online renewal and must renew in person at an Access PEI location if they:
- hold a valid driver’s license for a Class 7 Instuction Permit or a Class 9 Tractor's License; or
- have changed their name or address;
- hold a license that has been expired for more than six months.
If your license has been cancelled, suspended or disqualified in PEI (or in any other jurisdiction), you are required to contact Highway Safety and make an appointment to review your renewal options. In Person Renewal
You can renew your driver’s license in person at an Access PEI location if
- Your name or address is different from that listed on your current license, OR
- Your license is expired more than six months.
Please note: if there are outstanding fines or restrictions on your license, you are required to make an appointment with Highway Safety to review your options.
To renew in person you will need to:
- Visit an Access PEI location;
- Have your current license with you;
- Fill out the Application for a Driver’s License form;
- Pay the renewal fee;
- Keep your current card (if you have one) until your new driver's license arrives in the mail.
Can I renew an expired license?
Yes, you can renew an expired license online as long as the license is not expired longer than 6 months and your address has not changed from that currently on your license. Otherwise you must visit an Access PEI location for renewal.
Once I renew online or in person, will I get my license?
If you renew online, a temporary document will be mailed to you which is valid for 60 calendar days. Your new card will also be mailed to you and may take up to 30 business days to arrive. Once your new card arrives, destroy your old card, just as you would an old credit card.
Online you will have the option of printing a receipt as proof that you have renewed your license and paid the necessary fee. This is NOT your temporary license.
All driver licenses are issued with design and security features to help prevent identity theft and fraud.
What photo will be used on my new driver’s license?
Your new license will use your current driver’s license photo. If your current photo is not suitable or you wish to update the photo for your new license, you will have to renew in person at Access PEI. If renewing online, the Driver Vehicle System will automatically validate the suitability of your photo.
How much is the Renewal Fee?
A PEI driver’s license renewal fee is $116 for a 5-year license. Payment options include Visa, MasterCard, and Interac (debit card).
Where can I renew my Driver’s License in person?
You can renew your driver’s license at any Access PEI location in the province.
How long does it take to renew a driver’s license?
It takes a few minutes to renew your license online. If you renew in person, it will depend on how many customers are at the Access PEI location when you visit and if you have brought the required documents with you.
Why does the renewal application require personal information?
Personal information collected on the application form determines your eligibility to receive a driver's license and is authorized under the Highway Traffic Act Section 70 (1) and (2). Your information will be used only for the purpose intended. For more information read Privacy and Security.
What measures are in place to prevent identity theft?
Your driver's license card is embedded with multiple layers of security to help prevent identity theft and fraud. All Canadian jurisdictions (except the Yukon Territory) and the majority of U.S. states use secure cards featuring several risk mitigation tools. Facial recognition technology is applied to your photo to ensure each driver is issued one license and one associated record. On PEI, facial recognition software was implemented in 2007 and is one of the tools used by trained Highway Safety staff to prevent identity theft and other forms of fraud.Your information will be used only for the purpose intended. Will you share facial recognition data with anyone else?
The Province of Prince Edward Island is committed to protecting your privacy. Facial recognition data is used to verify facts in a license application and is not shared with any other agencies, except when required by court order.
Driver license and photo ID Cards have design and security features to help prevent identity theft and fraud. There is no fee increase associated with the new secure cards.
