July’s Automotive Heritage Month marks Prince Edward Island’s long motoring history and recognizes the Islanders whose classic vehicles keep history alive on our roadways.

July 14 is Automotive Heritage Day for 2017. The National Association of Automobile Clubs of Canada (NAACC) has had every province declare July as Automotive Heritage Month since 2010.

“Our province has a rich automotive history – going back to the operation of Canada’s first automobile at Rustico in 1866,” said Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy Minister Paula Biggar. “This month gives Islanders a chance to learn about automobile history, and share our province’s automotive heritage.”

Enthusiasts will display their vehicles at events throughout July including:

•    the Potato Blossom Festival Car Show in O'Leary, July 23 from 1p.m. to 4 p.m.; and

•    the PEI Street Rod Association’s 39th Show ‘n Shine, June 30 to July 2 at the Old Brudenell Park.

“The purpose of this declaration is to recognize the importance the automobile has had in the lives of everyone for the past 100 plus years,” said Wilfred Moase, vice president of the National Association of Automobile Clubs of Canada. “It also recognizes those who restore, protect, and show their vehicles not only in July but throughout the cruising season. NAACC encourages enthusiasts to cruise in your vehicle during the month of July to honour the hobby we all enjoy.”
