Building homes that are environmentally sound and energy efficient will be the focus of a free panel discussion hosted by the City of Charlottetown and efficiencyPEI.

“Build a Better Home” will take place on Monday, January 23 at 7 p.m. upstairs at the Prince Edward Island Brewing Company. Regardless of their heating source, energy efficient homes help Islanders save money and use energy more efficiently – helping to reduce greenhouse gases emissions and meet the province’s energy and climate change goals.

“We are excited to co-host this informative and collaborative event with efficiencyPEI,” said Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee. “Building a home that is efficient can provide homeowners with major cost savings, and is more sustainable for future generations.”

"The provincial government offers a number of incentives to help improve energy efficiency for homeowners," said Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy Minister Paula Biggar. "We are also considering comprehensive energy efficiency and conservation measures, including the adoption of the National Building Code and the National Energy Code for Buildings province-wide."

The panel of experts will include Andy Collier, energy program officer at efficiencyPEI; Betty Pryor, Water and Sewer Utility projects officer at the City of Charlottetown; and David Carmichael, horticulture technician at PEI Forests, Fish and Wildlife. The panel will focus on saving energy and minimizing environmental impacts through design, energy efficiency, landscaping and water conservation.

All are welcome to attend but the panel discussion may be of special interest for contractors, people building or considering building a new home, or those renovating or retrofitting an existing home.
