Supporting Island families -

The Prince Edward Island government’s recent investment in a Concussion Awareness Program for Island youth is good news to the executive director of Sport PEI.

“Athletes and Coaches are becoming more aware that concussions are brain injuries and can’t take them lightly anymore.” Gemma Koughan said.  “This investment will help educate and increase awareness on concussions.”

The provincial government in its balanced 2018-19 budget committed $210,000 over three years to UPEI to support a research and implementation project.

Province invests in concussion research and programming.

It's all about increasing awareness of concussions, injury prevention, reliable and accurate concussion detection, injury management, and surveillance.

“It’s a great investment,” Koughan says.“Taking  athletes' safety seriously is a good thing.”

“We want to make physical fitness, sport participation, athlete development and an overall culture of wellness a part of Islanders’ everyday lives,” Health and Wellness Minister Robert Mitchell said.

“To make this possible, we must sustain and build on the system we have and support our dedicated health professionals in communities across the Island – and that is what our investment in concussion awareness and prevention is intended to do.”
