Animal Welfare Appeal Board

The Animal Welfare Act Appeal Board is an independent appeal body that hears appeals regarding animal seizures, orders and adverse licensing decisions.  It provides a fair and equitable appeal process that is independent of the Prince Edward Island Department of Agriculture.

What is the function of the Animal Welfare Appeal Board?

To make decisions on whether or not an appeal should be granted or denied.

Primary Role:  adjudicative

How many people are on the Animal Welfare Appeal Board?

The board shall be comprised of not fewer than three people appointed by the Minister.  The makeup of the board shall be as follows:

  • One person shall be a veterinarian
  • The others shall be knowledgeable in regard to animal husbandry or animal welfare

Additionally, the chair and vice-chair are designated by the Minister.

One member must be a veterinarian.

            Members must be knowledgeable in regard to animal husbandry or animal welfare

What are the nomination requirements?

The nominations are at the discretion of the Minister of Agriculture upon recommendation to the Executive Council.

Will I get paid?

The Chair shall be paid $70/hour worked, to a maximum of $1000 per appeal.

The Vice-Chair shall be paid $40/hour worked, to a maximum of $572 per appeal.

Every other member shall be paid $40/hour worked, to a maximum of $572 per appeal.

What is the time commitment of the Animal Welfare Appeal Board?

Hearings are held upon receipt of an appeal. Members are appointed for a term of three years and are eligible for reappointment.
