Eighteen new medications and expanded indications are being added to the Provincial Pharmacare Formulary and Health PEI’s Cancer Treatment Centre Formulary in early September.

The new medications assist in treating six different types of cancer as well as various illnesses including cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, and skin disorders. The expanded indications will broaden the use of medications, making it easier for patients to get the treatment they need.

““Improving access to essential medications is not just about treatment, it’s about outcomes. When medications are accessible, it improves patient outcomes. These new medications bring us into better alignment with other Atlantic provinces, and they are an important step toward improving our healthcare system on PEI.”

— Mark McLane, Minister of Health and Wellness

The Department of Health and Wellness worked closely with Health PEI’s Cancer Treatment Centre to review and recommend the new medications.

“Adding new cancer medications to the formulary improves timely access to cutting-edge cancer treatment, reduces financial barriers for patients, and ensures equitable care for Islanders. Access to newer therapies can lead to longer survival, fewer side effects, and improved quality of life.”

— Sarah Lutes, pharmacy manager – Oncology & Ambulatory Services at HPEI’s Cancer Treatment Centre

“Being told that you or a loved one has a chronic disease- or cancer- can be a scary thing. The minds of Island residents will be put at ease, with the knowledge that the provincial formulary is expanding in response to continuous advancements in drug therapies.”

— Erin MacKenzie, executive director of the PEI Pharmacy Association.
