Students at schools across Prince Edward Island are learning from local artists through the Canada-wide ArtsSmarts program.
ArtSmarts injects arts into core academic subjects such as math, languages, social studies, and science by bringing artists into the classroom to share their skills and talents. The artists work with teachers to integrate arts disciplines like visual and literary arts, dance, music, and theatre into students’ lessons.
“Engaging our young people in artistic activity helps them evolve into creative thinkers,” Education, Early Learning and Culture Minister Doug Currie said. “ArtsSmarts uses the arts to ignite students’ excitement to learn, and to inspire collaboration between artists and educators in giving our students the best educational experience we can.”
ArtsSmarts is providing 268 students at eight Island schools the opportunity to learn through the arts during the 2016-17 school year. As projects are carried out, students, teachers and artists can share their experiences with all Islanders on social media with the hashtag #ArtsSmartsPEI.
ArtsSmarts is a program of the Department of Education, Early Learning and Culture and a provincial partnership involving the Confederation Centre of the Arts, Commission scolaire de langue française, the Public Schools Branch, Culture PEI, the PEI Crafts Council, the University of Prince Edward Island, the Human Rights Commission of PEI, the Fédération culturelle de l'Î.-P.-É., and the Eptek Centre.
Two year-end events will celebrate the ArtsSmarts projects that have been completed at Island schools. Titled “Open your Mind and Learn Through the Arts: A Year in Review,” they will be open to the public on May 18 at 6 p.m. at the Eptek Centre in Summerside and May 19 at 6 p.m. at the Confederation Centre of Arts Art Gallery.
