Province appoints new members to the University of Prince Edward Island Board of Governors

Five Island residents will bring their fresh perspectives and expertise to advancing post-secondary education on Prince Edward Island.

Through Engage PEI, the following individuals will be joining the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) Board of Governors for a three-year term. 

  • Carolyn Simpson of Charlottetown
  • Lynn Ellsworth of Granville
  • Mary Anne McMahon of Charlottetown
  • Mary Robinson of Albany
  • Pam Montgomery of Stanley Bridge

“These are five distinctively strong women with over 100 years of combined experience in post-secondary education, corporate governance and community service. This will undoubtedly serve the university well,” said Minister of Workforce, Advanced Learning and Population Jenn Redmond. “Their individual and collective voices will help ensure the university community is a healthy and safe place to study and work.”

The UPEI Board of Governors consists of 26 members appointed by the Province, the UPEI Board of Governors, the UPEI Alumni Association, as well as the Senate, faculty and student body of the University. The UPEI Board of Governors will be accepting applications for new members until October 20, 2023.

“I am grateful and excited to have this group of individuals join the UPEI Board of Governors and bring their unique talents, expertise, and perspectives to support the University on its path forward. Having these new, additional voices will enhance our ability to guide the University, ensuring it offers students quality education and a productive learning environment for which UPEI is known,” said Chair of UPEI Board of Governors Shannon MacDonald.

Background:

Carolyn Simpson of Charlottetown has a Master of Education in Leadership and Learning from the University of Prince Edward Island and over 35 years of experience working within the Department of Education and Early Years and Holland College. She has extensive experience in federal, provincial, and territorial relations. She has also served on several boards, including Queens County Residential Services, Habitat for Humanity, PEI Association of Licensed Practical Nurses and more. 

Lynn Ellsworth of Granville has a Bachelor of Arts in Modern Languages from Queen’s University and a Public Administration Diploma from the University of Prince Edward Island. She has over 30 years of experience working in the Government of PEI and works with the Heart and Stroke Foundation of PEI. She has also volunteered with various community organizations, such as the Sherwood-Parkdale Skating Club and Women’s Employment Development Program. 

Mary Anne McMahon of Charlottetown, Queens County has a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Prince Edward Island and a Bachelor of Laws from Queen’s University. She has over 35 years of experience in tax, corporate law, and corporate governance. She was formerly legal counsel to the Canada Revenue Agency Board of Management and is currently Chair of the PEI Community Care Facilities and Nursing Homes Board.

Mary Robinson of Albany has a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Business from Acadia University and is a Certified Crop Advisor. She has served on multiple boards for private businesses and non-government and government organizations, including the Canadian Federation of Agriculture and the World Farmer’s Organization. 

Pam Montgomery of Stanley Bridge has an Executive Master of Business Administration from the University of Prince Edward Island and currently works as the Chief Executive Officer of Habitat for Humanity. She has numerous years of experience in strategic planning and execution, financial and administrative management, and fundraising.
