Tignish residents requiring long-term care services now have the option to stay in their community after the provincial government approved 12 new beds at Tignish Seniors Home.

Located in the heart of the community, Tignish Seniors Home is a non-profit organization, owned and operated by its members. The home has 52 community care beds and following countless volunteer hours and generous donations from the community, a new wing has been added that includes 12 long-term care beds.  After recruitment efforts for staff were completed, the home officially opened to residents in June 2025.

“Government collaborated with Tignish Seniors Home to recruit healthcare professionals,” said Mark McLane, Minister of Health and Wellness. “From call outs to consultations, the Department of Health and Wellness and Health PEI helped make this day a reality. We are so pleased to see the home open to welcome its first residents so they can be cared for safely, in their home community.”

Nine of the 12 beds are currently filled at Tignish Seniors Home with 3 pending (waiting on acceptance). Tignish families, friends and neighbours are happy to have their loved ones back in their community after being cared for at other long-term care homes and hospitals across the province.

“We are seeing emotional reunions as our residents who have been waiting patiently for us to open finally return to the community,” said Penny McLeod, president of the board of directors for Tignish Seniors Home. “There are so many stories of our elders who had to go elsewhere when their needs exceeded our ability to care for them. We are so grateful they can return home and that we can care for them now.”

PEI has nine public and 11 private long-term care homes offering 1,315 beds and exceptional care for hundreds of Island seniors across the province (including the 12 new beds at Tignish Seniors Home).

The Nursing Home Association of PEI (NHAPEI) is pleased to welcome the Tignish Seniors Home into their group of private and not-for-profit providers who offer long term care services in PEI.

“We believe it is important for residents to be able to access care in their own communities and for lifelong connections to be maintained when moving into nursing care; having these new beds will keep more Islanders closer to home, said Darlene Oakes, Executive Director of the NHAPEI. “NHAPEI homes have been a support to Tignish Seniors Home in their journey toward opening these beds, and we look forward to working with them and the Government of Prince Edward Island to improve the lives of Island seniors.“

Government continues to invest in public and private long-term care homes. Over the past year, 54 private long-term care beds in total were added to several homes across the province. Also, RFPs were issued recently to add another 175 private long-term care beds.

An additional $11 million was committed in the 2025-26 capital budget over three years to add new long-term care beds at Colville Manor in Souris and Stewart Memorial Home in Tyne Valley.
